A round that doesn’t get appreciation: Wild Card Weekend 1993

On Saturday you had Steelers/Chiefs overtime which featured a blocked punt, 4th quarter Montana magic, Lowery going from goat to hero, Neil O’Donnell going toe to toe with Joe Cool, and the last game at Arrowhead with artificial turf.

Later that day, Detroit/Green Bay round 3 after both had played 6 days earlier for homefield. You had Barry Sanders, Brett Favre, and Sterling Sharpe. Not just the dramatic last minute TD, but don’t forget George (Ice) Teague’s 100 yard pick 6. The last home playoff game for the Lions to date.

On Sunday you had a cold weather defensive slugfest between the Vikings and Giants. Simms and LT’s last Meadowlands game, that wacky Jim McMahon Minnesota squad, and the last appearance in purple for Anthony Carter and Chris Doleman.

Then to close it out Broncos/Raiders III. They had played a wild game 7 days ago that got LA in and Denver could have hosted a WC game. While the final score was 42-24, the 1st half alone (21-21) with Elway and Hostetler going back and forth was a barnburner

You had a bit of everything: old Montana and young Favre on Saturday, and an offense/defense contrast on Sunday

Great call CS ...

O'Donnell played well in that game but couldnt extend a ten point lead and put the Chiefs away. That place erupted when Joe threw the 4th down TD pass ... The Packers - Lions game was great as well. I liked listening to Vermeil doing color on that game "This is what happens when you have a QB with a very strong arm" ... he made alot of cool comments and enjoyed covering the game in Pontiac!

Couldn't agree more. Especially the Saturday games. One of my favorite single WC days.

Another great day of wild card games happened on sunday Jan 5th, 2003, as the Steelers led my Tommy Maddox, had a great comeback against the Browns led by Kelly Holcomb, who was outstanding. Hines Ward caught fire and led the comeback. After this game, Kerry Collins and the Giants had the 49ers and Jeff Garcia buried, before Garcia and Terrell Owens led a furious comeback. The defenses in both games in the second half, just collapsed for the Browns and Giants. Entertaining day indeed, though bettors lost big-time ...

I liked the games starting at 1pm Eastern time ... I miss early starts for playoff games, though it was tough for fans on the west coast ...
