Freebie Games,3rd Down Punt,Quick Kick,&Single Wing

Post by LeonardRachiele »

If memory serves I saw all three of these situations in college football many years ago.  Just for fun, maybe  the Eagles could have used these plays to spice up exhibitions and meaningless year end games while waiting for the playoffs. There have been four such games since 2000 with the Eagles losing all of them. The first game on the list was at St. Louis and the other three at home.

2004-lost to the St, Louis Rams 20 to 7.
2004-lost to the Cincinnati Bengals 38 to 10.
2010-lost to the Dallas Cowboys 14 to 13.
2017-lost to the Dallas Cowboys 6 to 0

There was another such game on 06 with the Eagles defeating the Atlanta Falcons.  However, we did not know the game would be meaningless until it actually started.  Detroit defeated Dallas eliminating the Cowboys from the Playoffs.

Quick Kick-This is not the quarterback lining up in Shot Gun formation and punting.  A Quick Kick is a punt with any runner, including the quarterback, kicking  the ball at or near the line of scrimmage.  It is the very opposite of a fake punt.  Like anything else, working properly that ball will roll a long way.

Third Down Punt -When using this, a team must have almost no faith in its offensive unit and  faces a long yardage situation.

Single Wing-Three backs are at a 45 degree angle to the offensive line.  The snap goes to the Tail Back and the quarterback  and wing back can run or catch the the ball.  There are double tight ends.  As you might expect, this formation involves a running game with very little passing.  Princeton and UCLA used the single wing in the 50s but now it almost nonexistent.

The quick kick actually originated as a sort of option play. Single-wing teams would line up in the short punt formation with a snap to the tailback. If the defense didn't have a deep safety, the tailback would punt the ball. If they did have a deep safety, the tailback would run or pass.
