NEW USFL

Post by GameBeforeTheMoney »

Okay, so is anyone following this? Is anyone planning on following this?

Are they going to compete with the NFL for players? Compete with the NCAA? They sent out a press release stating that they're providing free tuition to players through Strayer University. Hard to really tell if they are planning to give players an alternative to college football or if they are going to be signing players to compete with the NFL or if they are going to kind of be like a league for players not quite ready for the NFL.

Not sure if I was under a rock for a while and they started announcing things a while ago but I first started hearing about it a few months ago and it seems like it just sort of popped up all of a sudden. I am curious as to what the full idea is.

A couple of other things to note -- there will be a "player selection" meeting in February. Also, players are eligible for the league if they graduated high school in 2020 or later.

Here is the league's official site: https://www.usfl2.com/

The big question is: Will they accept walk-ons from Trump University?

They haven't released a statement on that, but it might come once the league expands and includes the Idaho Small Potatoes.

Odd that a team would name itself after some guy's testicles.

I think I was pretty intrigued by the USFL the first time around. Not so much this time (although I admit that I liked several of the USFL uniforms - I think my favorite was the Arizona Wranglers').

Head coaches named so far:

Todd Haley -Tampa Bay Bandits
Mike Riley - New Jersey Generals
Bart Andrus - Philadelphia Stars
Kevin Sumlin - Houston Gamblers. Remember when Sumlin was considered a rising star in the coaching ranks about 10 years ago? Defeating Alabama when he was at Texas A&M turned out to be the high point of Sumlin's career.

I've heard of all of them except for Bart Andrus. I have no idea who he is.

I had season tickets for 2 years for the Oakland Invaders.
If they had an incarnation in this revised USFL I would be more inclined to interest.

However, with no local franchise I think I will probably not be as interested.
I'll probably watch a few games to see if it seems worthwhile. After that... we'll see...

Maybe I could root for the Maulers but it'd be nice if they had a team somewhere in the west.

Can't help but think it's going to be a similar deal as the AAF and XFL (which is also coming back under The Rock), but I'd be more than overjoyed if this USFL started making a play for top college talent. It will have a nostalgia draw that the other leagues lacked if nothing else.

Maybe its a generational thing, but I thought the USFL uniforms were spectacular (other than the Stars and the Stallions looking exactly the same). They were very modern and unique. I always liked the Breakers. For comparison, the WFL uniforms were the ugliest I've ever seen. Nearly all of them were awful:
