I saw this story online today. It discusses Elroy Hirsch switching from running back to flanker and credits the 1949 Rams coaching staff for making the switch. It paid off, no question.
But an important fact is left out. Hirsch suffered a fractured skull in 1948 while playing for the Rockets in the AAFC. That injury almost certainly played a role in the switch from RB to WR when Hirsch played for the Rams in 1949.
Hirsch is an interesting story. I'm sure that his role on the 1951 championship team is discussed in the PFRA's upcoming book on that team and I'm looking forward to reading that book.
