Harold Carmichael

Post by JohnTurney »

He certainly had a pro-personnel aspect that gave him an advantage
over other receivers--with his health and had a good percentage of
TDs per catch

my memory is he dropped passes at a higher rate than others

he did get 3 votes for All_Decade, enough to make the 2nd team

but I just think he took a slot from Cliff Branch---and created
more of a backlog

guys who come out of nowhere to make that team seem so odd
Hill, HC, JC, ES to name four---just think of 4 guys with more "honors"
that could have cleared the backlog

instead my understanding is that Belichick kind of steered some of
those discussions, though cannot say on those 4 specifically, just that
he had the gravitas on that committee (and the NFl 100 stuff)

It isn't that someone is *awful* per se but that a Little or LeBeau
those guys take the slots of six guys who, in general, whoever
those six are, who have more traditional "cases"

just odd--just venting

Well, your vents (on this subject) are much more informed than most...

I think by virtue of our being (mostly) "historians" here we take (almost by definition) a longer-ranged view than most.
I knew/know two (minor) sportswriters who had no idea of NFL history before Lombardi... the Packers of the 60's were "old school" to them... and this was in the 1990's...

A lot of people (including those who get to vote) have no perspective on the early days of the NFL.
And so, for those of us who find that topic fascinating, their choices often seem uninformed and bewildering.

With Branch, it hurts him that so many Raiders on those teams are already voted in, which helped Carmichael, one of the few bright spots on an average offensive team. His postseason TDs helped him as well. Will Branch or Harold Jackson be the next senior receivers voted in, or will defensive players - Gradishar, Riley, Howley- take the next two spots ?

Wistert may only get voted in, if the seniors go back to two per year starting in 2025 ...
