The Lions article starts off: "The NFL has not kept sacks as an official statistic for its entire 75-year existence." I can't think of what the "75" is referencing. It's not 2021 minus 1920 or 2021 minus 1982 or 1982 minus 1920.

On another note, I wonder if PFR would ever consider including David Neft's pre-1933 statistics.

Article could have been written in 1995. I still wonder what the sacks/hurries numbers for Gene Brito or Marchetti could have been ?

I think they meant that sacks haven't been an official stat for the entire time. NFL started in 1920, sacks only started being kept in 1982.

Anyway, big congrats to John and Nick for all of this research. I remember years ago when we didn't even have the starters for each team documented. So much has come together in the football history realm by members here.

There's a good discussion of Harvey Martin in terms of 23 v. 20 here: https://nflfootballjournal.blogspot.com ... eason.html

But, I wasn't able to find anything similar for Coy Bacon. The back of one of his football cards states he had 26 sacks in one season. Not sure whether the source of the 26 was a team media guide or what the back story is.

With his 114 sacks, plus another 17.5 in postseason, hopefully The Beautiful Harvey Martin show will get another hard look from the rotating senior committee voters for the HOF ...

I could have swore I heard an NBC announcer, maybe Dick Enberg, state during the Pitts/Cinc game in wk 12 of the 1976 season, that Coy Bacon had 24 sacks with the two games to go (Raiders, Jets) though Turney says the number was really 21.5 for the season ...

Awesome. I am so glad to see that those old players will finally get the credit for their accomplishments. Kudos to John and Nick for finding an outlet to publish them!

Congratulations to John and NIck for this hard job, and thank you for sharing with us. Hopefully someone at PFR could update some AVs with all this data (like Claude Humphrey in 1980, AV 2 but he had 15.5 sacks, it should've been higher IMHO).
