’21 Buccaneers…’77 Raiders…

Post by 74_75_78_79_ »

It’s been said just now that these current defending-Champs are the first in 44 years to have all 22 of their offensive/defensive starters back from the year before!

Any other such defending-Champs of the same description that come to mind albeit SB or League champs?

Thanks!

I think the 1968 Packers had everyone back. Don Chandler didn't come back, but wasn't one of the 22. McGee and Thurston were no longer starters. Ben Wilson started in the Super Bowl, didn't play for the 1968 Packers, but did come back and was IR because of a knee. Mercein also came back, but really the starter was Jim Grabowski, and he was back, as well as Elijah Pitts and Donny Anderson. They had all of the 22, just losing Chandler. They did bring a couple of specialists to camp, Ferndando Souza and Metro Gerela, later had Errol Man on the taxi squad, but tried to skate by with Kramer and Mercein doing the kicking. Really late in the day for that.

I always thought that the 70s Steelers kept all their starting players after each of their four Super Bowl victories.

Note: Off the top of my head, now I remember that guard Gerry Mullins retired after Super Bowl XIV. Also, I believe that WR Ron Shanklin started in Super Bowl IX and didn't play the following season (injury?) but I don't know if he was still in the Steelers' roster in 1975.

I am sure the 1981 Raiders had all the 22 starters from 1980 back, plus their punter and placekicker.

As crazy as it sounds, Swann and Stallworth didn't start Super Bowl 9. Frank Lewis and Ron Shanklin did.

Also, Andy Russell retired in there somewhere.

Many people never knew that Shanklin was the Steeler's MVP in 1973. Swann and Stallworth would take the starting jobs rather quickly ...

Russell came back in 1976, as it did Ray Mansfield.
