Guess it's time to start this thread. See who looks like a 'genius' by season's end. Sure it won't be me, but why not give it a shot. Obviously feeling pretty confident about my team this year; not afraid to jinx things. Just can't help but to see '14 as Big Ben's watershed year. Only thing that may ruin it in the very end is a budding dynasty out in the Pacific Northwest. The defending-Champs got an awesome D all-around but if there's any chance to beat them your O must at least be balanced; the more you can run, the better and the Steelers ought to have that this year along with the D being back to trademark form. We'll just have to see. O'Brien in Houston or Gruden in DC ought to win Coach of the Year; take your pick.

I'm predicting that the Broncos will collapse after Manning suffers a major injury, and the team has no fewer than four starting QBs. The Seahawks, like the 97-99 Patriots, will lack the discipline that got them to the Super Bowl and will begin a steady decline that Carroll isn't able to reverse. The Colts shockingly easy schedule carries them to first overall in the regular season, and one-and-done in the playoffs.

Random Thoughts:
While I'm not doing playoff picks, I do think there's a good chance that for only the second time during the SB era the same two teams will meet in the final game two straight years. While they've lost a couple pieces defensively and wr is a ? mark (I keep seeing write ups talking about the impact having Percy Harvin for a full season will have while seemingly ignoring what an iffy possibility that is), the Seahawks look to be the most complete team overall.
On the AFC side, the Broncos were obviously already strong and have added pieces to their defense. Plus, they'll have Clady and Miller back. No Welker for a while and Decker is now a Net, but Emmanuel Sanders should be able to help fill the void. Manning's another year older (and that arm definitely isn't getting stronger) and it's possible that Talib and Ware may continue to have injury issues, but the Broncos seem like the safest bet to make it out of the AFC.
Re: the AFC East. In the words of David Byrne, 'same as it ever was'. What IS different is that for the first time in a while NE has more buzz on the defensive side of the ball. While he's kind of become a mercenary, Revis is still one of the league's best corners and, fully removed from the AVL tear and in a scheme that fits him, should have a big season. Big ? for NE - still lacking a big-time wr. Gronkowski is the closest and remains to be seen if he can finish a season healthy.
Teams most likely to decline from a year ago - Kansas City, Carolina, Arizona and...San Francisco. I was going to go with them as my #6 team in the NFC, but there's enough ? marks (Gore, Boldin and J. Smith another year older, no Bowman or A. Smith for a good portion of the season, how well Kaepernick will progress, iffy secondary) for me to say they'll finish around 9-7. I'll go with the Bucs, making a turnaround similar to the Chiefs' last year, as the second wild card.
While the division winner picks in seven of the divisions seem to be near unanimous, the AFC North looks like the exception. Biased, but I'll go with the Steelers finishing 10-6 and edging out the RAvens and Bengals for the crown. Steelers' D is a work in progress, so I think they'll need Ben and the O to carry more of the load, at least through the first 4-6 games. The schedule should help. I have the Ravens, with new o-coordinator Gary Kubiak finishing 9-7 and taking the final AFC playoff spot. Bengals, who lost both coordinators (losing Zimmer, in particular, hurts) and have Atkins and Hall both coming back from major injuries, slip to 8-8. Jets also finish with the same record.
Recently, with it seeming becoming routine for teams to go on the road and win at least two games in the playoffs, it appeared that HFA didn't mean as much as it used to. Well, as the saying goes "everything old is new again". Especially in the NFC. Good as the Seahawks were in 2013, it's not hard to picture them losing that NFC title game if it's played at Candlestick.
Favorite for the #1 pick in 2015? I'll say the Raiders. I thought they had the worst roster overall in the league last season and while they've added names (Jones-Drew, Tuck, Woodley), I don't see it being much better in 2014.

With most of the Week 1 games done, I would make these adjustments-
Switch Bears and Bucs with Falcons and Panthers.
This idea that Carolina would fall apart and be bad I could not buy. That said, I did have them dropping to 7-9. But I did say to a forum member last week that I could see any of the South teams finishing in last place with an 8-8 record.
The Bears defense is a major problem. That team cannot survive Cutler turning the ball over.

Some week 1 observations:
I am probably more optimistic about the Seahawks repeating as Super Bowl champs than any team since the Patriots went back to back.
I was very impressed with the Browns, from coming back from a 24-3 deficit to tie the game. They should stick to just running the no huddle.
I knew that both the Falcons and Texans could not possibly be as bad as their records indicated last season. Look for both to be in the playoff hunt come December.
Why are the Steelers not wearing some sort of patch on their uniforms to honor Chuck Noll?

Cowher was wearing a CHN pin today and he said the Steelers would have it on their unis. Was there a sticker on the back of their helmets, maybe? I didn't watch that game much and didn't notice anything either way.
N.B. Because of the way some listed their comments, some additional spacing was added to be sure all are separated.

Favorite for the #1 pick in 2015? I'll say the Raiders. I thought they had the worst roster overall in the league last season and while they've added names (Jones-Drew, Tuck, Woodley), I don't see it being much better in 2014.

If the Giants can't win it - and they can't, I'd like to see one of the quality groups that has never won it finally drink from the grail.
And, after all, Philadelphia is still just a suburb of New York.

Still too early but looks like most that made predictions are in good shape. Though Byron and myself are the only ones who saw Dallas being good.

The Eagles' end-of-season nose dive knocked the snot out of my prediction(s.)
How did others fare?
(Yes; yes; yes; I can see it now: #1 seed and a lot of other stuff. Nice job!)

Re: 2014 predicitons
Before the season I picked a Seattle over Denver Super Bowl repeat. So far that looks possible if not probable... Depending on where the AFC Champ game is held.

Still a week to go, plus the SB pick.oldecapecod 11 wrote:The Eagles' end-of-season nose dive knocked the snot out of my prediction(s.)

Here's what I had;
East: Patriots (correct)
North: Ravens (Won't win division but could still make playoffs)
South: Colts (correct)
West: Broncos (correct)
Wildcards: Steelers and Chiefs (Steelers are in, and could win divison. Chiefs still have a chance but they and the Ravens can't both make the playoffs so at best I'll have 5 of 6)
NFC
East: Eagles (wrong)
North: Packers (correct)
South: Saints (wrong)
West: Seahawks (correct)
Wildcards: Bears and Cowboys (wrong on the Bears, one of I think only two of us who picked the Cowboys to make the playoffs. So 3 out of 6 NFC teams and two division winners correct)
Super Bowl: Seahawks over Broncos

Matt:
As much as I hope you are right about Green Bay, they still have to win on Sunday to win the division although you are correct about them making the playoffs.

Of course, my bad. Meant "correct" on playoffs, jumped the gun there on the division, ha.

Re: 2014 predicitons
Here's a cute article concerning "predictions" by "experts" - good for a few laughs...

Yeah, so about those NFL preseason predictions ...

With the NFL regular season nearing a close, the preseason has been long forgotten. (How 'bout those 5–0 Giants!)
Here are the five worst predictions the #experts made prior to Carrie Underwood's first official intro song of the 2014 season. While all are horribly, comically wrong, a few still maintain some signs of life.

Re: 2014 predicitons
If Baltimore gets in I will have all six AFC teams correct. In the NFC, a Carolina win will give me four of six, as I had New Orleans and SF wrong instead of Detroit and Arizona. I had SF beating NE in the Super Bowl, but I've already got the winner wrong.

I'm always shocked when I get any of these predictions things right.
