Alvin Kamara TV stat graphic

Post by Bryan »

During the Saints-Falcons game, Alvin Kamara surpassed 500 yards rushing/500 yards receiving for the 4th consecutive year from the start of his career, and the broadcast put up a graphic that said only two other players had accomplished this for the first three years of their careers...Abner Haynes & Herschel Walker. Aside from the obscurity of such a stat, the announcer reacted to the graphic by saying something like "this puts Kamara in pretty good company"....but at the risk of incurring RemembertheAFL's wrath, does it? It's not like the other two RBs were Jim Brown and Walter Payton. It just seemed odd, as I'm sure 95% of the viewing audience had no idea who Abner Haynes was (and didn't recognize the uniform he was pictured in).

Announcers nowadays feel obligated to gush over whatever great players happens to be playing in the game they're calling. I actually made a note of this yesterday. Either Buck or Aikman said about Aaron Rodgers.... "Well he has MY vote for MVP!". Then a few hours later on the SNF pregame show, Collinsworth said practically the same sentence word for word when talking about Mahomes. Granted, different "experts" can have different opinions but still.

Maybe he knew Haynes was a recent HOVG inductee and he meant "very good" company :)

In all seriousness either because of the coin toss or whatever reason, Haynes has a name that sounds like football royalty so maybe people just assume it. If it had been Cookie Gilchrist or someone maybe the announcer would have hesitated.

Glancing at Kamara's numbers, what I find most interesting is that he had exactly 81 catches in each of his first 3 seasons. An arcane statistical feat. Alvin's middle name should be Consistency.
