Former CFL kicker Ted Gerela passed away on Monday July 20th at age 76. Gerela was one of the first soccer style kickers to play in Canadian pro football. After being voted 1967's top rookie in the CFL's Western Conference, Gerela set a new pro record on Nov. 2, 1968 by becoming the first player to kick 30 field goals in a single season. Gerela also filled in at running back and linebacker. He retired after the 1973 season. Ted attempted a brief comeback in 1976 with the expansion Seattle Seahawks but left training camp due to a nagging calf injury. His brother Roy played for the Houston Oilers, Pittsburgh Steelers and San Diego Chargers. Both Ted and Roy were inducted into the Powell River (B.C.) Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.
