Best ‘scab’ squad of ’87?

Post by 74_75_78_79_ »

There were just three teams that went unbeaten during that Week #3-thru-Week #5 stretch. They were...San Diego, Washington, and San Fran. Of course you had Dallas who was 2-0 going into that final ‘scab’ Monday Nighter in which they lost to Wash who was also 2-0 going in. Who do you think was best? Was it one of the 3-0s, or could it have been a 2-1? Such as Ditka’s “guys”?

I tend to lean either Redskins or Bears. Redskins had the best offense I think and the Bears the best D. I tend to discount the teams that had lots of folks cross the picket line including Dallas and San Fran. Probably the worst team was Philly as Buddy seemed to just not care for scabs.

I agree with Philadelphia the worst scab team with journeyman Guido Merkens at QB. However, the Vikings came close with veteran Tony Adams at QB, who was out of football for years. They had a decent secondary, though, with Rufus Bess and John Turner, who had played for the VIkings the previous seasons.

My favorite topic!

The 1987 replacement Super Bowl (using strictly replacements and not those who crossed the line) most likely would have been San Diego vs. Washington, but in the NFC, Chicago would have made for a quality title game opponent. The AFC would have been more wide-open - Denver, Houston, maybe the Raiders.

As for the worst? Buffalo, Giants, Minnesota - take your pick...

The Giants team would get my vote because they kind of torpedoed any repeat title chances. They also lost to Buffalo's replacement team in arguably the worst game in NFL history.

Greg Tranter wrote a Coffin Corner article about that game recently.

IT's interesting that both Lawrence Taylor and Jeff Rutledge played in that game for the GIants.

Buffalo also had 4 players cross the picket line including Robb Riddick (who would score 13 TD's the next season) and Keith McKeller (TE who was the namesake for the K-Gun offense).

Skins were the best, especially since their last win came on the road against a Dallas team that had plenty of vets that crossed the picker line. No surprise that the Niners also went undefeated since they also had a number of their best players cross the picket line.
