original Super Bowl homefield discussion

Post by Bryan »

What was the discussion back in 1966 about having the Super Bowl played at a neutral site? Was that a Rozelle idea? Did any faction prefer the current format of having the title game at one of the participating teams' home stadium?

I think an unintentional (intentional?) byproduct of the neutral site format is that the game itself is played in a sterile, controlled environment for the most part. We don't see title games like the 1965 Packers-Browns anymore. Every Super Bowl is a carbon copy of the previous one in terms of aesthetics...night game, perhaps in a dome, national anthem, excessive fireworks leading to smoke, overwrought halftime show, confetti. Rinse, repeat.

It wouldn't shock me if there was an NFL firewall. I mean suppose an 10-4 NFL team was facing off against an 11-3 AFL team. That NFL team would never acknowledge to a 2nd class league that their opponent was superior (having played an AFL Schedule) and deserve to host the game at their home stadium

I could see them wanting to have them in large stadiums, in fun warm weather cities as perhaps a way to incentivize the teams and fans wanting to make a trip out of it, and also the press to hype the game.

Lamar Hunt pushed the neutral site almost from the start, probably because he knew the NFL would throw a fit if they had to play at an AFL stadium. Of course, he probably wasn't crazy about sitting in a potential blizzard in KC.

The Coliseum was far from the first choice, with Pasadena, Miami and New Orleans all in the mix.

Good guess, but the answer is Archie Griffin (official fumble) and Ray Griffin (unofficial fumble) both mishandling Ray Wersching's squib kick in SB XVI.
