I've been working on a project for the last couple years to compile the statistics of all professional football leagues: not only the NFL, AAFC and AFL

but also the USFL, WFL, WLAF/NFLE, XFL, Arena League and the late and barely lamented UFL. Included is the most complete set of Canadian

Football League statistics available online, thanks to CFL head statistician Steve Daniel who has spent the last several years enhancing and

correcting the league's stats from years past. I'd love any thoughts on what we've compiled. If anyone has any other stats to contribute, please let

me know. I hope this can be a good resource for researchers who may previously have had a difficult time locating stats from some of the leagues

in a consistent format.

Here are some fun, multi-league guys:

Interesting site-- one thing I found intriguing was being able to instantly look at side-by-side stats for a two-sport player, like Ron Widby in 1968--

40.9 yards punting average for the Cowboys and 38.6% field goal percentage for the Buccaneers...

Or Bud Grant, 997 yards receiving for the Eagles and 249 points for the Lakers.

Is there some way to search for players by name?

You bet, to search by name:
http://www.justsport...tballsearch.php

Each sport has its own search which you can generally find listed within the main sports menu at the top of the page.

Echoing the comments of our esteemed President, it is, indeed, an interesting site.

Navigating by trial and error is very easy - especially for one my ilk who shall never attain the non-coveted genius card.

It is always admirable when someone braves the bitter bite of criticism and boldly displays the results of her or his efforts. KUDOS!

Those who pick at nits and lice will likely be soon to seek the inevitable mistake while fumbling through their cardboard boxes.

Keep up the great work.

I think it is a wonderful site - another tool for some of us of whom even Broadway asks, "What do the simple folk do?"

I found your site about three weeks ago while searching for stats on some of the CFL's first soccer-style kickers (Ted Gerela, Ivan MacMillan, Gerry

Organ, etc.) I was amazed to find in-depth player statistics, team rosters (dating back to 1945), head coaching records and yearly game results all

from one source. Adding individual & team statistics from regular season, playoff & Grey Cup games would really be groundbreaking stuff ... any

chance we might see this in the future? Thanks for the work that you (and Steve Daniel) have put into this!

I like it a lot. The multi-league guys stuff is well needed. Sporting News used to do that . . . and Pro Football Reference does not do it, not that it's a

criticism, they just don't do it. It also explains gaps in guys careers, the ole' "where did he go" like Jerry Tagge and others.

Thank you for the kind words, everyone. The CFL statistics are probably what are most gratifying to have up, simply because most of them weren't

available online anywhere else. Just this week we received an email from someone who played with the 1945 Toronto Argonauts. We'll continue to

seek additional stats as well. In addition, we're going to constantly strive to add new features to the site as well. Any suggestions, comments or

criticisms, please let me know.

I like it, and it's useful.

Sure it's only because it's a work in progress, but if there's going to be stats from all the leagues a player played in then the awards from those

leagues should be listed as well? As opposed to just the 'NFL' awards (e.g. Flutie's page, should include his CFL Outstanding Player Awards, etc ...)

Very nice. Suggestion: The search feature should be part of the home window. Shouldn't have to "search" for it. Otherwise, I like it!

I'll step up to the plate and risk a beaning from oldecapecod.

I am opposed to the "Totals" line on Flutie's and Warner's pages. I don't believe there is any good in totalling those players stats from multiple

leagues. The leagues have different rules. Warner's total pro stats might bump him up and might make him look even better if his "Totals" are

compared to a quarterback who only played in the NFL. -

Paul, this is great stuff. Something like this has always been a sort of panacea for me...the ability to combine all professional football league stats in

one place, including the "hard to reach" USFL, WFL, Arena and NFL Europe stuff. Harkens back to the old days of the Sporting News football

registers, which would often do that.

Just a couple of questions.
Any chance you could add postseason stats?
Also, I noticed some regular season fumble and defensive stats are not included for USFL and NFL Europe, which are generally available in some

league guides.

Totals are available by league as well, so those just looking for his NFL totals are able to find them. The Totals line is for a player's combined numbers

in all leagues, but league by league breakdowns are also listed.

We are seeking to add stats to what we already have, including game participation, fumble and defensive stats for the USFL and NFLE. One issue

that sometimes arises is that numbers aren't available for all teams in a season or were kept inconsistently. If anyone has additional statistical

information on any of the leagues, please let me know.

The league by league totals are important and necessary. I personally find no importance or value in combining Arena league stats with CFL stats

and NFL stats. I might be the only one, though. Otherwise, the site is good and I have no issue with anything. -

Just looking at a random favorite player....

Of Bruno Banducci it says: "Banducci caught 1 passes for -4 yards and 1 receiving touchdowns in his career."

The TD was in the 1950 season (where no receptions are listed) and the -4 yard reception in 1952 (both NFL seasons).

Sorry to stumble on a problematic entry but... huh?

Now on to Chuck Bednarik...

And then there were three...

Please do not fear a beaning. My beanbag was stolen during my last trek across the steppes.
Instead, how about a pat on the back concerning your statement regarding combined accumulated totals.
I am sure there are many who will whole-heartedly agree. (Three anyway...)

I think the insignificance of combined totals is especially highlighted by the misnomered PFHoF which is, in fact, a hall to recognize the exploits of

those who performed in the National Football League, its predecessor, or organizations with which it merged.
And, we have certainly seen the disparities prevalent in the recognition of some of those records and statistics.

Much good that occurred in other than NFL venues is clementined by the hall - but not forever thanks to groups like the PFRA and sites like

ProFootballArchives, et alia, and now, JustSportsStats.

Were it otherwise, that and other valuable and interesting information would accumulate like trash in basement boxes never to be shared with the

world.

In another post (and perhaps in another thread,) someone wondered what is a "tinker's damn."
In reality, it is a "dam" - an item that when used becomes useless - as useless as data that never sees the light of day.

Interesting... in one of the verses used in the "Tinker, Tailor" rhyming game, reference is made to "pigsty, barn" and perhaps it is a barn with a

basement where boxes are stored?

wow, talk about no good deed shall go unpunished. I guess I'm a tad more forgiving as I appreciate the hard work that goes into putting something

like this together.

Anyway, I doubt most people are seeking to COMBINE statistics across leagues, as it certainly doesn't work well with indoor and outdoor leagues

(be it football, or soccer). But it's nice to have a complete professional resume for a player and there's really no place to be able to do that on the

web, other than this site, as far as I know.

I agree totally-- nobody has to read the stats from CFL or Arena football if that's not their cup of tea, and it's not like Mr. Reeths adds all of those

figures together as if they were comparable (there are figures for total NFL, total CFL, total WFL, etc.). I like being able to see a player's entire

resume, asking the Cotton Eyed-Joe question ("where did you come from, where did you go").
There are plenty of places where there are NFL stats only, like pro-football-research.com -- no need to re-invent the wheel, but sometimes one

drives in something with several wheels.... .

Yeah. I think anyone who puts in that kind of effort deserves much praise. The totaling is okay, since everything is clearly marked . . . most people

Funny you should mention soccer. We're working on that, too, We have a good MLS database along with some NASL, NASL Indoor and MISL

information. Aside from MLS, our soccer database isn't as mature as our football db. Still plenty to do on all the databases, but it's been a lot of fun

for me to get the alternate football league information up on the web in a fully searchable format. My own frustrations in tracking down numbers over

the last couple of year made me particularly eager to get this in front of fellow researchers and sports historians.

I welcome the CFL, Arena, USFL, etc. stats and already mentioned I like the site. I imagine it was hard work to put the site together.

Since I am being painted as a jerk, might as well just go all the way. I think it is pointless to combine Arena stats with NFL stats and CFL stats with

NFL stats and WFL stats with NFL stats, etc. Furthermore, it is extra work for the people doing the work at the site. If the site becomes popular it will

only be a matter of time until somebody compares Doug Flutie's career pro stats to Ken Anderson's and conclude that Doug Flutie was clearly a

better quarterback. I have already come across this type of thing on other forums. I once had to battle multiple people on why Damon Allen does not

belong in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Believe it or not, people were actually comparing Allen's CFL stats to the NFL stats of quarterbacks who only

played professionally in the NFL.

More people seem to agree with you than disagree. (I am among them.)
There are some people who will argue at the drop of a hat and, in order to do so, drop the hat.

Discussion and disagreement in a friendly and professional manner is part of the fun shared by PFRA members and its guests.

I'm glad that Paul and his colleagues hit on a good idea. It's a lot of extra work, true, but all stats websites have to have something that makes them a

little different from the ones that have gone before.... or else, what's the point? With this particular model, I think it's a matter of time before

someone starts adding NCAA statistics to go with a player's pro stats. The multi-league records, however, are a brilliant concept.

Nice site! I will say that there is some additional information you could add for the AAFC. To wit: in the Record Manual for each season there is a

listing of "Longest Rushing" and "Longest Passing" plays (as well as "Longest" fumble returns, punt returns, kickoff returns, punts and field goals)

that you can use to add Long Gains for some players.

We're going to continue to bulk up the stats on the site, so please keep checking back. If anyone has information to share, particularly if it's in a

digital format, please drop me a line. We should now have bios and stats up current through this past weekend's Arena League action.
