starting QB as placekick holder

Post by Bryan »

Does any team still use their starting QB as the holder? I can't recall seeing this in the current NFL. If not, then who was the last starting QB to also be the holder? Was Tony Romo the regular holder when he was with the Cowboys?

I'm not sure if he held onto the job after that playoff loss to Seattle.

Remember, Romo began the season as the backup quarterback. IIRC, Dallas didn't want to switch holders in midseason, so Romo kept the job even after he took over as the starter.
Brett Favre was the holder when he came to Green Bay. In his first extended action, he threw a touchdown with about 30 seconds to play to tie the game at 23. He then had to hold for the go ahead extra point. As soon as he got the ball down he pulled his hands away from the ball, so he wouldn't get kicked. Apparently, he didn't remain the holder very long.

I don't know if Tom Tupa served as holder during his stint as the Phoenix starting QB. If he didn't, then the last before Romo was probably Joe Theismann. Joe Montana also served as the holder for his first year or two as the starter. I remember he was the holder for Ray Wersching's FG in OT to complete the 28 point comeback against New Orleans.

Romo was also the backup holder when he was the starting QB and replaced their punter (if I remember correctly those were the McBriar years) as holder more than once. So, at times he was doing both as starting QB and being the holder, post-the season mentioned above.

Matt Schaub was the backup QB and the holder for a few teams (Falcons, Raiders) and when Vick was injured and he started at QB he stayed as holder.

Jake Plummer was full-time holder as starting QB with the Broncos.

Montana was the holder for Wersching in Super Bowl XVI.

I loved when Pro Bowl defensive backs were holders (Roger Wehrli, Paul Krause, Nolan Cromwell, Charlie Waters) and wide receivers, like Steve Largent and Steve Kreider, who scored extra points due to a botched snap (before the two-point conversion was instated) and TDs on fake field goal attempts.

I was at a MNF game against the Bills when Largent did that.
