Kick step for OT

Post by bachslunch »

John Turney wrote an article at his website about OT Elijah Wilkinson, who uses something called a kick step. Is this a good thing, bad thing, or neutral thing? What, if anything, would a lineman stand to gain from it? The article doesn’t say. Just curious.

Thanks!

I believe the tackle is trying to gain leverage particularly if expecting a bull rush.

From a former All-Pro tackle
"I did. Not a big fan of the kick step as you know but that is the new technique they have been teaching for awhile. I’m really not sure why. I don’t think rush guys are lining up any wider today then they were when I was playing. They are bit faster off the ball getting in the track stances and teeing off so maybe that’s why they are teaching the kick step. I just think it opens you up to a straight inside move, a club back inside move or a spin move. That backward momentum is hard to recover from."
