We've had a thread about the longest "to go", but not the longest when its "Goal to go".
One example I have is 11/12/61 Det@StL, Detroit has 1st and Goal from the 5, the following plays are:
- Pietrosante for no gain, 2/G/5
- Ninowski sacked for -12, 3/G/17
- Ninowski passes, but holding on Detroit -15, 3/G/34 (recall holding was a spot foul at the time)
- Ninowski sacked -14, 4/G/48
- On 4th down Detroit Punts
So they go from 1/G/5 to Punting.
Using PFR's Play finder since 1994 the longest I can find is the Bengals 10/2/2005 versus the Texans who had 3/G/40 after a long Carson Palmer Intentional grounding penalty.
Anyone have longer than 4/G/48, or a goal to go situation where the team ended up having to Punt?

Re: Longest 'Goal to go"
One of the things that I am certain will come out of the game book collection effort is that an organized fan effort, may be from within PFRA, may be not, will take on the long-overdue task of digitizing the history of pro football along the lines of the Retrosheet effort with baseball play-by-play. I feel pretty certain that one day in the near future a fan will have at his fingertips the tools where he or she can look something like that up in a matter of seconds.
