Candidates for America's Game (Missing Rings)
Candidates for America's Game (Missing Rings)
I was watching the 1969 Viking episode of the Missing Rings, and I was thinking about candidates for that show if they ever did it again.
The first one that came to mind was the 2010 Jets, and then the 2009 Chargers.

The 1966-68 Don Meredith Cowboys, the 2006 Chargers, the 2007 Patriots and any number of Chiefs teams.

Would not have been easy for the 2010 Jets in the Super Bowl vs Green Bay who shut us down 9-0 at home earlier in the season (though there were a lot of questionable calls that game) though it would be funny thinking of the inept Sanchez with a Super Bowl ring. The Jets were plain worn out heading into Pittsburgh. They were 11-5 and had to win on the road vs Manning AND the next week vs. Brady. Then had to go on the road again.7DnBrnc53 wrote:I was watching the 1969 Viking episode of the Missing Rings, and I was thinking about candidates for that show if they ever did it again.

If they made the Super Bowl that year it would've been the most difficult Super Bowl road ever traveled

The 1998 Minnesota Vikings immediately come to mind for me. Certainly would have been a more entertaining SB that year if the Falcons had not upset them. The 1984 Miami Dolphins also fit the category. Both record-setting seasons with no ring at the end.

1972 49ers: Can cover the 1970-72 seasons. 1970 and 71 were their best chances. Don't see them even getting out of Washington in 72, let alone beating the undefeated Dolphins.
1976 Patriots: Should have been their year. They had the Raiders beaten, and the Steelers didn't have Franco and Rocky available the next week (the Pats won there earlier that year). Also, I don't think the Vikes beat them.

70 was the Niners' best shot, playing at home in the conference championship and coming off a big upset at Minnesota. They didn't exactly roar into the 71 playoffs and then outlasted the first edition of Allen's Redskins.7DnBrnc53 wrote:1972 49ers: Can cover the 1970-72 seasons. 1970 and 71 were their best chances. For those Pats, you could focus on their three straight years of horrible luck, beginning with the 76 controversy. The following year, the Gray/Hannah walkout cost them big and then the Fairbanks fiasco killed a team that was clicking as they got set to enter the postseason.

The 1976-79 Los Angeles Rams. Or the entire 1973-79 Rams era.

2016 Falcons.

1980 Bills: If Ferguson isn't hurt in SD, and they get out of there with a win, the Raiders are coming to Buffalo the next week on a very cold day. I like Buffalo's chances to get to the SB, and I think they beat the Eagles.
1980 Falcons: If only they don't choke against Dallas.
