Depictions of Football in American Cinema
Depictions of Football in American Cinema
What are some of your favorite (and least favorite) depictions of football in movies? Pro's, College, CFL...anything you'd like
Doesn't have to be the most accurate. Doesn't have to be a whole movie that revolves around it either. Could be clips here and there
For me I've always absolutely hated the movie Any Given Sunday.
Loved the little football scenes in Forrest Gump (believe one of them he runs back a kick for a TD against the Vols) also like the Giants/49ers clip from The Pursuit of Happyness
Enjoyed Necessary Roughness as well as The Best of Times with Robin Williams and Kurt Russell. Though I saw both when I was much younger so I wonder if I'd like them as much if I see them now
Also Bingo from 1991. My kids love it and it had a football storyline running through the film

I liked it in "The Waterboy" when Coach Klein pretended the mean head coach was a baby and a cocker spaniel.
I also liked the practice and game scenes in "Rudy."

I'm a sucker for high school football movies. So All The Right Moves, Remember the Titans, Friday Night Lights and yes, even Varsity Blues (Coach Kilmer is very quotable) ... but really anytime a movie is football related I default like it at some level. Or a movie that has football scenes, such as my favorite part of Forrest Gump is the same as sheajets mentioned.

The Program - hysterically accurate. Especially Lattimer.

I would highly recommend this movie to anyone.sheajets wrote:....The Best of Times with Robin Williams and Kurt Russell.....
And even more so for a football fan.
It is lighthearted, touching and fun.
And, of course, Robin Williams...

North Dallas Forty was considered fictional, even though the depictions of key players and coaches mirror the Cowboys to a T. It was pretty good, while Semi-Tough was horrible.
When it comes to The Longest Yard, I want to vomit anytime someone brings up the remake. At least Burt Reynolds looked the part. Adam Sandler? Please.

I really enjoyed Invincible. There was, for the most part, a good attention to historic detail in regards to players. I think I remember seeing Mike Boryla, Frank Lemaster and Harold Carmichael. There's an inaccurate bit of dialogue in the opening scene though... "We just lost to a team even worse than us!" That team was the Bengals who happened to finish 11-3 that year.

The disease that he had been diagnosed with shortly before his suicide (lewy body dementia) is absolutely terrifying though. I believe he was told initially he had Parkinsons

Love the dinner scene where they try to watch MNF while reconciling with their wives.JuggernautJ wrote:I would highly recommend this movie to anyone.sheajets wrote:....The Best of Times with Robin Williams and Kurt Russell.....
