A very tragic Kory Stringer type moment that never gets talked about. Anybody here have any recollections of it and what was said in the press following this (especially about players practicing in the searing July heat) below is the only picture I could find of it (Dan Dierdorf plainly visible as well as other well known players)

Under Bud Wilkinson, the Cardinals had shifted to early morning and early evening practices to avoid the heat and had at least two water breaks per hour. Cain died during a Sunday night practice where it was about 90 and muggy. It turned out that Cain had a rare heart condition that could only be detected after such an attack.
Certainly in the days that followed his death, teams made a point of making sure there were water breaks. Of course, that's a common reaction--hyoervigilance in the immediate aftermath and then maybe adjustments from that point on.

I was 12 when this happened. Growing up in the D.C. area we didn't get a lot of Cardinals news and in the days before widespread cable tv, information was sparse outside of your media market. I recall my dad talking about it and the Cardinals wearing armbands for that season but that's about it. For those old enough to remember, what kind of player was J.V. Cain? Recently I've been watching team highlights on YouTube and he stands out to me with his long frame and he would make some acrobatic catches.
On a different note, I see Dan Dierdorf #72 in the picture and rookie Roy Green #25. Can anybody identify other players?

My wife grew up in the St. Louis area. She's often said summers would be like a sauna. Highs well into the 90s every day and extreme humidity. Cain was coming back after having blown out his Achilles the year before. I recall he was a solid TE who wasn't used all that much when it came to catching passes. One of the more tragic aspects of his death was that he died on his 28th birthday,

#76 is Charlie Davis who won a Super Bowl his rookie season in Pittsburgh
