offensive ineptitude

Post by ChrisBabcock »

So I was watching the Bills/Patriots game last night and graphic came on the screen that at first I thought had to be a misprint. The Bills have scored ZERO touchdowns in their last 50 (FIFTY!) drives starting in their own territory. I have got to think we’d have to go back more than a half century to find another offense this bad? Maybe the “more punts than points” 1992 Seahawks? The 1942 Lions who only scored 38 points on the season?

Chris, I don't know the answer to your question, but saw some of the game and was reminded of other recent night games - Cardinals/Broncos, Dolphins/Texans. I feel like I've now seen a few teams that really looked like they were no competition for their opponent. Seems like its pretty easy to rattle off some really bad teams this year - wondering if this is a season that doesn't fit the parity narrative or maybe its always like this and I've just been watching more games.

The 1976 expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers failed to score a TD in their first 56 drives. It was left to the defense to score the first touchdown in franchise history, as Danny Reece ran in a fumble recovery late in a blowout loss to the Colts in week four. Apparently the embarrassment of having the defense get their first touchdown galvanized the Bucs' offense, because immediately afterwards they recovered an onside kick and swept down the field to score a TD of their own!

The 2008 Browns (among their many recent disasters) scored a grand total of 31 points in their final six games, allowing 129. The fact that they had a third string QB handling things for most of that run explains why they were so pathetic.

I'm not surprised about the Bills. They haven't had an offense ranked inside the Top 10 in points since 2004. In 2018, Buffalo was ranked 30th in both points and yards on offense. Yikes!

A recent one that sticks out but doesn't get talked about

2000 Bengals only had 2,219 passing yards total the entire season. That is an insanely low total for the post 1993 NFL. Only 6 passing touchdowns all season as well. Today it seems every three weeks somebody throws for 5 or 6 td's in a game

In that same vein, the 1973 Browns had Mike Phipps throw for 1,719 yards and nine touchdowns--with 20 picks, with Don Horn completing half of his eight passes for 22 yards--that 2-yard TD coming in garbage time of a blowout win over the soon--to-be 1-13 Oilers. Yet with two weeks left in the season, they were in a three-way tie for first in the AFC Central. They lost their last two games and collapsed the next season.
