And now we have college players bailing on bowl games for fear of risking their draft status. Wonder if we'll have bowls countering this trend by inviting schools with certain conditions (player X better be there). Might affect attendance figures.

I agree with conace and Mark Ford. I know that back in these days, players were not paid any money until they made the team. There were no "guaranteed" contracts. So, the starters wanted to make sure they did not get cut. The guys that were cut were not paid.
