2001 VS 2018 Patriots

Post by 74_75_78_79_ »

Bookend (as of right now) titles. Both finished 11-5, 2nd-seed. Both beat Rams in the SB. Belichick/Brady/Kraft around for both. Safe enough to say these are the bottom-two of the Pats' six championship teams (I would think they are).

Had my new 2001 Honda Civic during that first Pats' SB-run; still have it now. Perhaps I should get a new one so this Dynasty can end already, lol.

2018 Patriots were better than 2001. They were worse than all of the rest, including the three Belichick teams that lost the SB.

Oddly enough, my wife and I first met in 1994... the Niners haven't won a title since.
I blame her.

In 2001 (or early 2002, I guess) my boss asked me who I thought would win the super bowl.
I told him I thought the Pats would win because although they had inferior talent they were the better team.

He laughed and asked me "Do you really think that bunch of over-achievers has a chance against "The Greatest Show on Turf?!"
Come Monday morning he was rather contrite.

The similarities I see between 2001 and 2018 is that both teams exceeded the "sum of their parts."
But then that is the nature of the Patriots Dynasty.

Not sure who to pick between ’01 or ’18, but I will place them both over all Belichick/Brady SB-losers with the exception of, of course, 2007.

Well that, and the fact that the Pats were allowed to get away with a lot of extra-curricular activity after the whistle on defense.

Maybe you should watch the NFL's Greatest Games episode about SB 36. Tom Curran talked about how Belichick did business as business was being done. That night, the refs weren't calling any of the Pats' extra curricular activity on defense, so they kept doing it.
