Most notable-ever '20-17' game?

Post by 74_75_78_79_ »

Most common final score so far in pro football history. According to PFR, there have been 264 such games with that very final (58 games ahead of '27-24' which is currently in 2nd). Funny, without looking it up it was hard for a '20-17' to naturally come to mind. So I did a quick scroll and stumbled across the only game the '84 Forty Niners lost. Of course I'm a bit biased toward it but there would have to be many better candidates. Ones which upon hearing would make me say..."Oh yeah, I should have known!"

Any '20-17's that more easily come to your minds?...

When reading the thread title I instantly thought of the 1977 AFC Championship Game. Super Bowl 36 is another one.

See? I knew it! And didn't I just start a '77-based thread? Yes, Pats 20 Rams 17...

Other notables are the 1962 AFL Championship Game and the Jets two playoff games in January 2005.

*Four weeks before they blew them out in the 1961 title game, the Pack beat the Giants in Milwaukee.
*The last of Blanda's remarkable five-game streak of heroics in 1970 saw him kick a FG to defeat the Chargers.
*The Niners scoring in the last 30 seconds to defeat the Vikes and clinch a playoff berth in 1972.
*The "Mel Gray Game" with the sketchy call that helped the Cards beat the Skins in 1975
*Twice in three weeks in November 78, the Falcons beat the Saints.

I have no idea is it would be considered the greatest 20-17 game ever but it certainly has to be up there.... The one that came to mind immediately when I saw this thread was Super Bowl 36. Patriots 20, Rams 17

1956 - Detroit 20 49ers 17.

in an interview, Detroit Lions offensive tackle Lou Creekmur relates a story of his leg whipping prowess. In that 20 to 17 game against the 49ers, Creekmur says that the Lions were losing by one point, but toward the end of the game, he inflicted a good leg whip on 49ers defensive end Charley Powell, which Creekmur said he knew that Powell would be very angry. Lou then told the referee to watch Powell for slugging him. Sure enough, Powell slugged Creekmur and the 49ers were penalized 15 yards, which put them close enough to try for a field goal, which was good and Detroit won the game.

Actually, it was years after that game that Creekmur was talking about and I believe that he got some of his facts wrong, which can easily happen. I checked out the games that Detroit and the 49ers played when Powell and Creekmur played and the 20 to 17 game was the only one that could have been the game that Lou Creekmur was talking about. That was a game that was tied 17 to 17 when a Layne field goal won it for Detroit. Powell was listed as the starting right defensive end for the 49ers in 1956. Creekmur was the starting left defensive tackle for Detroit that year.

That game was part of a 6 game winning streak that Detroit started that season with as they were making a very good comeback from a last place season in 1955.
