Joe Kuharich trade question

Post by Bryan »

Getting caught up on my Coffin Corners...intrigued by the Joe Kuharich piece in that how terrible he was with the Eagles at personnel decisions. Two trades stand out...the Jurgensen trade for Norm Snead, and the Baughan/Cross trade to the Rams for castoffs. My question is this: was their any backstory/personal animosity with Kuharich and those players? Did he simply not like Jurgensen/Baughan/Cross? Were there any particular incidents?

Kuharich did say when he took over that the team needed a "complete rebuilding."

With regard to Jurgensen, he missed a good chunk of the 1963 season with an injured shoulder. Kuharich might have doubted that he could come back, but he also indicated the fact to get Snead, who was five years younger, was based on his supposed "bright future."

Kuharich found a waiting home for Baughan and Cross with the arrival of George Allen with the Rams:

Baughan said after hearing that he was traded that he had been expecting it because Kuharich blamed the Eagles lousy year (5-9, fourth-worst in points allowed) on the defense and he was a captain.

Cross actually was feuding with one (unknown) Eagles assistant, was having problems negotiating his contract and said that losing Baughan would make him less effective, while also throwing out the retirement threat.

I recall a Sport magazine story about Norm Snead being traded to the Vikings in 1971 and his competition with Gary Cuozzo for the starting job. The writer, whom I think was Gary Cartwright, said the Jurgensen-Snead trade "was in the best interest of all concerned."

I once heard there were also some off-the-field issues with Jurgensen also prompted the trade. Kuharich was by all accounts a lousy NFL coach, although they did have an unlikely 9-5 season in 1966 with him as coach.

It was an anomaly of a 9-5 season as they received very mediocre quarterbacking from Snead, King Hill and Jack Concannon. The Eagles were outscored 340-326 by the opposition and ranked 11th in both total offense and defence.
