Helms Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame

Post by Rupert Patrick »

In researching the 1951 Rams for the PFRA book, I came across a reference to the Helms Athletic Foundation Professional Football Hall of Fame which was naming their new inductees for 1951. I was not aware of there being another pro football Hall of Fame that predated the one in Canton.

The first article is from the Arizona Republic from 8/3/50 and announces the creation of this new Hall of Fame:

The second article is from the Green Bay Press-Gazette from October 1951 and announces the 1951 inductees:

I wonder whatever became of the trophy with all the names of the inductees engraved on it, whether it is in Canton or if it disappeared.

The Helms Athletic Foundation was absorbed by the LA 84 Foundation, and I suspect that all or most of its artifacts are now held by that organization.

I was out there a few years ago (our Olympic organization was making a presentation to the LA84 curator).
They have an excellent sport library which they were in the process of digitizing. One item in their collection
is complete official Olympic reports which I found useful.
I believe their memorabilia collection is open to the public by appointment and their library is accessible online.
