“Quarterbacks have been allocated by region based on where they played college football or last NFL/CFL team. If they went to school outside of an Alliance team's area the player will essentially be a free agent.
“The draft will begin with each team deciding which, if any, quarterbacks that have been allocated to them by their region they will protect. The protected pick becomes a team's first round selection, much like a keeper league in fantasy sports.
“After each team has made that first pick, the teams which chose not to protect a quarterback will begin selecting from the entire pool of signal callers in their draft order.”

AAF draft to leverage fan interest in regional QBs
"Five seconds to go... A field goal could win it. Up in the air! Going deep! Tipped! Caught! Touchdown! The Vikings! They win it! Time has run out!" - Vikings 28, Browns 23, December 14, 1980, Metropolitan Stadium

SD protected Josh Johnson to start if off. Best part was Marshawn Lynch's interview afterwards.
I do like the starter jackets they're giving the players.
