Linebackers Now Wearing Numbers in the 30s?
Linebackers Now Wearing Numbers in the 30s?
So, are they running out of numbers and letting linebackers wear numbers in the 30s this year - i.e. Brandon King (who was a safety before) #36 of the Patriots is now listed as LB.

I know they expanded the linebackers numbers into the 40-49 range a few years ago. (Kiko Alonso, Vic Beasley) The 30s is news to me.

I know, still looks weird though! Didn't they make a big deal out of Bosworth wanting to wear 44?ChrisBabcock wrote:I know they expanded the linebackers numbers into the 40-49 range a few years ago. (Kiko Alonso, Vic Beasley) The 30s is news to me.

Andy Russell wore number 34 for most all his career, if memory serves. FWIW.

I don't think linebackers are allowed to wear numbers in their 30's. Most likely is that the Patriots moved him to a LB-S hybrid role, and they just didn't change the number.

J.J. Wilcox (#37) of the Jets is another one.JohnTurney wrote:RIght like Deonne Bucanon and Mark Barron, both LBers with DB numbersconace21 wrote:I don't think linebackers are allowed to wear numbers in their 30's. I think he was grandfathered in after the uniform number rules went into effect. Like Larry Wilson wearing 8 and John Hadl wearing 21.Andy Russell wore number 34 for most all his career, if memory serves. FWIW.

Russell was a FB in college at Missouri (or, as Facenda says in the 75 Steeler highlight film, "Mizzurah"), which may explain his #34 (like Mike Curtis wearing #32 after being a FB at Duke). Ted Hendricks wore #83 because he was a DE at U of Miami.ChrisBabcock wrote:I think he was grandfathered in after the uniform number rules went into effect.
