Best team so far this decade

Post by 74_75_78_79_ »

From the '20s Canton Bulldogs all the way to the '00s Pats, every 'team of the decade' since the NFL began won at least their 2nd title of their respective decade by the end of year 5. However, so far here in the 2010s, there have been six different Super Bowl Champs: Packers, Giants, Ravens, Seahawks, Pats, and Broncos. Where do you rank these teams amongst each other? Any NOT among these six whom should be thrown in this convo? Harbaugh's Niners, perhaps?

I guess I would have to say Seahawks so far considering just how super-close they were to repeating last year, but what I find intriguing is seeing how THIS YEAR's Broncos would have matched up with their 2013 installment. A completely different team than they were 2 years ago.

Can't be "team of the decade" without a championship, of course.

So just ranking the six teams from 2010-2015:
1. Patriots (in the AFC championship game 5 of the 6 years, two AFC championships, one SB)
2. Seahawks (two NFC Championships, one SB, and the best single season team of the decade, so far)
3. Broncos (two AFC championships, one SB)
4. Packers
5. Ravens
6. Giants (obviously would rank last, so far)

Still four years to decide it (I'm not really big on "decade" stuff since it seems arbitrary, but this exercise is harmless enough): Will goto whoever finishes the 10 year period with the most championships. I'd say Patriots, Packers and Seahawks have the best chance to get 1-2 more in the next 4-years, at least of the 6 teams. Another team could win 2 of the next 4 and steal the 'title' at the end of the decade. The Panthers, perhaps ... Best guess, will be the Patriots if it's an AFC team, Seahawks if it's an NFC team.

If the Broncos re-sign Osweiler, and he does a good job, they have a great shot at team of the decade honors, especially with Miller looking like he will get extended.

If not, then maybe the Seahawks or the Pats.

Yes, reviving another old post. Pats having won another Lombardi since, along with making it to yet another SB this past year (4 appearances altogether), ought to keep their so-far #1 status further solidified. Seattle and Denver, each at two SBs with one win each, still a solid #3 and #4 respectively. But now with this past year's Eagles, where do you place them, so far, amongst the remaining 2010s Lombardi winners: '10 Packers, '11 Giants, '12 Ravens? Birds definitely get nod with me over G-men and Ravens, but not over GB. As I stated before on this site, I think that Packer squad is a lot like the '88 Forty Niners; 10-6 but still a true-blue SB champ! Foles & Co would have their moments, but that Packer D would put up quite more resistance than that Pats D did thus allowing Aaron to win the QB-duel. 2010 Packers are better than quite a few SB champs so far this century IMO - '05 & '08 Steelers included. Better than '00 Ravens as well amongst others.

Thoughts?

EDIT - I meant Seahawks & Broncos, so far, at #2 & #3 respectively.

I'd go with the 2013 Seahawks as the best team this decade. It's difficult to compare the SB champs from 2000-2009 to this decade, because of how the game has changed. A team with a great defense like the 2000 Ravens or 2008 Steelers would be penalized more often for hits which were legal back then.

Yes, ’13 Hawks best one-year team so far this decade as well as best so far this century IMO.

To me, what was most impressive about the 2013 Seahawks was the fact that they completely shut down a record-setting Broncos offense in the Super Bowl. It wasn't the 2000 Ravens beating up on Bobby Hoying, Gus Frerotte and Kerry Collins in their postseason run. If you take into account the quality of opposing offense, the 2013 Seahawk defensive performance was probably the best in Super Bowl history since the Raiders stonewalled the record-setting Redskins offense in SB XVIII.

Had the 2015 Panthers won the Super Bowl, I probably would have put them over the 2013 Seahawks because they were dominant all year long, including the postseason, but then laid a 1964 Colts-like egg in the final game.
