As I just mentioned on another thread, I recently watched a little more than half of the Steelers at Eagles game from Week #4 of ’91 announced by Marv Albert and Bill Parcells. The (NBC) halftime show hosted by Bob Costas discussed who the best teams were along with what conference was better. It was discussed how outside SBs, that it was all basically even, especially the year prior with regular season games tied at 26-apiece. Bill Walsh, Parcells, and OJ each said they thought Buffalo & Houston were the two best teams. Parcells, however, did include Minn, Saints, Falcons, and Lions as other possibles. They generally felt that NFC’s current SB-dominance (so far 7-straight) was just ‘cyclical’ and all would even-out by decade’s end. Yeah, so much for that. End of ’90s same as ’80s with only two SBs not only being won by AFC, but each of the two by the same team (’80s Raiders, ’90s Broncos).
Only Will McDonough mentioned the Redskins along with SF who he thought were the league’s two best (as it turned out to be). Washington already pitched two big shutouts, one in the opener vs Detroit 45-0 and two weeks later vs Cards 34-0 with another shutout on the way vs Philly on MNF Week #5, 20-0. Yet they apparently still seemed beneath the radar. I’m guessing their not-so-great campaigns the three years leading up may have been the reason. And, I do remember, not being overly impressed with Mark Rypien going into ’91.
’91 Redskins - no respect yet in Week #4

I remember reading a preseason preview magazine before that season (I forget which) that correctly predicted a Redskins/Bills Super Bowl.... although with the Bills winning.

The Redskins were the pop pick that year in the NFC. In the AFC, the Bills and the Raiders were the popular picks.ChrisBabcock wrote:I remember reading a preseason preview magazine before that season (I forget which) that correctly predicted a Redskins/Bills Super Bowl.... although with the Bills winning.
