QB completing a TD pass to himself

Post by bachslunch »

Just saw this in the Titans-Chiefs Wild Card game, where Marcus Mariota caught his deflected pass and dived into the end zone. The announcers said this has happened only once before, with Rob Johnson in 1997.

Is that indeed true? There’s a 1962 Post football card of Frank Ryan saying he had done this, but it involved a lateral with Jon Arnett if this is to be believed. A Google search under “Frank Ryan football card” brings up the image.

Anybody know?

Brad not Rob in 1997.

The Johnson play was like today's Mariota play.

Didn't John Elway once complete a TD pass to himself?

I only know of the four plays already mentioned.

Elway caught a touchdown pass from Steve Sewell I believe.

Steve Young caught his own deflected pass and ran for about 3 yards before being tackled on the 1 or 2 yards line.
Closest I've seen to a touchdown.

It happens almost yearly in high school and college football that a QB catches his own TD pass, but Brad Johnson -and one from WA HS football 3 years ago- immediately came to mind the instant Mariota caught it.

During downtime of the game I tried to think of other non-TD ones and that Steve Young one popped in my head, as well as Favre.

Ryan Fitzpatrick completed a pass to himself in 2008 against the Jets.

I seem to recall Fran Tarkenton doing it in a Super Bowl ...

Later in yesterday's game, Gruden mentioned that Vikings QB Brad Johnson once caught his own batted-back forward pass and scored a TD in a regular season game.

Jim Kelly once caught his own batted-back forward pass in a Super Bowl, for negative yardage.

Fran Tarkenton did the same in a Super Bowl, but then completed a second forward pass downfield on the same play, so the whole thing was negated, due to his illegal forward pass penalty.
