If G-Men pull it off in OT, ’93 finale...

Post by 74_75_78_79_ »

...they’re actually homefield at 12-4; Big D of course top wild card. A beat-up Emmitt would not have that much-needed week off, ’Boys play (host) the 9-7 Vikes right away in the 1st Round! Assuming GB still tops the Lions, how do the rest of the NFC playoffs play out? A Cowboys win brings them to SF the following week while the Pack go to Meadowlands. A Viking upset? They visit G-Men instead as GB travels west. In such an event, do Favre, Reggie & Co do at the ’Stick what they’d pull off two years later in the divisionals?

If the Giants win that game (and the Bills lose the week before at home to the Jets), it would have been cool to see a Kansas City-San Francisco Super Bowl. I think the Chiefs and Montana pull it out in the end. That would have led to one of the ugliest days in sports talk radio history (in the Bay Area). Young would have been crucified all day, and the 49ers would have been criticized for trading away Montana.

Given this hypothetical, it would have made for quite a weary path for Emmitt & Co. Not just no bye week before the divisionals, but (if you remember) the Super Bowl that year being just one week after the conference championships! Four wins in four weeks to win it all.

However, just as long as #22 avoids a post-season-ending injury albeit banged-up and not full strength, I see Dallas still pulling it off. They were simply better enough than the rest of the league (including SF, home or away) to afford having Emmitt even at 50%. They barely lost to Buffalo in Week #2 with Lassic while shooting themselves in feet mind you with four turnovers (the embarrassment one week earlier simply a product of SB-hangover to a now-bad Gibbs-less Redskin team).

They would have well-afforded to use Emmitt sparingly enough against the Vikes 1st-Rd. They make it through Candlestick the following week hence get to go back home for the NFCC. IMO, I think 6th-seed Green Bay knocks off the Giants. Playing at home instead of another grueler in the Meadowlands cold would further assist in punching Dallas’s Atlanta-ticket. Just about spent by now, Emmitt makes a future-HOFer/warrior out of himself yet again as the rest of his teammates, especially on defense creating turnovers, assures the repeat.

Perhaps not exactly as dominating a post-season body-of-work as their actual (just three games) was, but letting it be known they were still #1 just the same; none of the four wins being squeakers either. Yes, Dallas (and especially with Jimmy still at helm) was simply better enough than the rest to overcome such a hypothetically tougher, breakless path.

Jets were robbed in that absolutely brutally cold game. Wind chills were around -30. Bills were awarded a touchdown earlier when Thurman Thomas fumbled the ball (basically lost full control of it between the 1 and 2 yard line) goes through the endzone. Somehow ruled a TD for Buffalo. Cary Blanchard also missed 3 field goals. Horrible

KC-San Fran. Toss up really. 1993 was a dead ball year for NFL offenses, but the 49ers had the leagues best (as well as a slightly below average defense) they were an unimpressive 10-6 by their standards at the time. I think Chiefs probably take that game 17-13 or something like that. It would've been built up as the ultimate dream matchup and the game would've ended up underwhelming. San Fran was just not quite ready yet in 93 and if they wormed their way into the SB I think Derrick Thomas and Neil Smith would've disrupted a lot of that offense.
