Donny Anderson: I scored winning TD in Ice Bowl

This is a new one. During an interview with Packers historian Cliff Christl, Donny Anderson said he scored two plays before Bart Starr's legendary quarterback sneak in the Ice Bowl -- and that Dallas's Cornell Green verbally acknowledged the TD -- but the officials marked the ball outside the end zone.

Could be just an old jock spinning yarns, and clips of the play show the umpire standing directly in front of Anderson as he fell, so it was probably the right call. But it was interesting to read this claim for the first time 50 years after the fact.

I'm pretty sure he's made the claim before but I can't pinpoint a source.

Anderson claims he scored on the 1st and goal from the 1 play. That wasn't the play, as he barely made it back to the line of scrimmage before getting stacked up by Cowboys. The questionable play was immediately following Mercein's 8-yard sucker play run, which made it 2nd and 2 from the 3. Anderson lopes over a pile of bodies and it looks like his upper-torso lands in the endzone with the ball, but perhaps his knee hit the ground just prior to him falling over the goalline.

The officials didn't worry so much about where and when the knee touched down as they did where the ball landed back in the much simpler good old days.

There's going to be (still) another NFL Films show on the Ice Bowl this year, this time on Timeline. After all it's the 50th Anniversary.

This story has been out there for a while. In fact, I featured it in my chapter on Donny in our 1966 Packers book. Buy the book!

It looked to me like he scored. The angle is not ideal. From memory he wound up on top of other players. I'll have to see if I can find highlights of similar NFL plays at the time. The rules were the same, but maybe in practice the refs were pickier about having the clear appearance of crossing the goal.

It was only two years earlier that the disputed Chandler FG occurred. The officials were more primitive, I guess. I thought in the Baltimore game that Bill Anderson might have broken the plane on one pass.

Donny had some nifty footwork on a couple of passes in that game. He was a distinctive player and a very good receiver. Fumbled a bit too much.

Cowboys really blew that finish to an extent. Considering the conditions, should have cut off the flat passes more than they did. Don't know why Landry or his assts. were always so lousy with pass coverage, considering Landry's background.
