KC Most carries in one game

Post by JoeZagorski »

Hey Guys,
I know that on October 20, 1968, the Kansas City Chiefs had a combined 60 rushing attempts against the Oakland Raiders. Do any of you know if the Chiefs ever eclipsed that record in their storied history since that date? Thanks in advance for your help answering this question.

Sincerely,

Yes, in a game at Cincinnati on September 3, 1978 the Chiefs had 69 rushing attempts:

This tied the record for the third most rushing attempts by a team in an NFL game:

Thanks Mark! I had a feeling that Marv Levy's Wing-T formation would have racked up some serious carries in a game.

The 1978 Chiefs are still third-all time for most yards rushing in a season with 2,986, only trailing the 1973 Bills (3,088 yards) and 1978 Patriots, who rushed for 3,165 yards. And to think with a rushing attack like that they managed to finish 4-12 in a AFC West where they went 1-7 against the division, and beat every AFC Central team except Pittsburgh, whom they lost to by only a field goal.

That was in Marv's first game at the helm.

FWIW in more recent times they had an official 53 combined rushing attempts against Seattle in 2006. Herm Edwards team so no surprise there.

Tony Reed rushed for 1,000 yards, and Ted McKnight, Arnold Morgado, Mark Bailey and the veteran MacArthur Lane were also with the 1978 Chiefs.

I think the 1978 Chiefs hold the record (possibly tied with some other team{s}) for the highest number of different runners to have a 100+ yard rushing game in the same season.
