All-time Chuck Knox starting lineup

Post by 74_75_78_79_ »

Again, as with the Parcells one, player(s) must be judged on how they played under Knox while he was their HC; not before or after. This ought to leave out Jackie Slater. His Pro Bowl and All Pro selections all came after Knox left Rams, and before his brief return to LA. Does a latter day Merlin Olsen make the cut? Three PBs in each of Chuck's first three years but no more All Pros at that point. Jack Youngblood and Steve Largent are obvious shoe-ins. Dave Krieg at QB, I suppose.

Biggest debate ought to be at RB - Curt Warner or Jerome Bettis? Curt rushing for more yards in both '83 and '86 than the (then called) "Battering Ram" did in his '93 rookie year, but 4.9 Y/A may just win #36 the starting spot! And I'm not being biased. I'm a Penn State-fan as well. Warner's got the receiving yards (300+ each) for both those seasons though.

Anyways, here are all four of Chuck Knox's stops (22 consecutive seasons total)...

Rams '73 thru '77
Bills '78 thru '82
Seahawks '83 thru '91
Rams '92 thru '94 (who from this tenure other than, possibly, Bettis makes the starting lineup?)

Not sure Lawrence McCutcheon isn't the RB. His career is perfectly timed with Knox's first Ram tenure...taxi squad in 1972, Pro Bowl every season from 1973-1977, then breaks down in 1978 after Knox leaves for Buffalo. 4 1000-yard rushing seasons (with 14 game schedules), a 5th season with 911 yards, an additional 650 yards in the postseason.

tough call, no wrong answer... the "peak" years for Warner were high, Clutch more consistent and healthy

Joe Cribbs should also be in the running for a running back slot. Otherwise, it's hard to argue with any of your selections. Joe DeLamielleure played very briefly for the Knox Bills, but their time together was too short for him to push out the guys you have already chosen.
