I had Cal Hubbard on my team (previous post) . It could be argued there weren't enough participants to make it really challenging to build a team - it didn't seem like a ton of non HOFers were drafted in my perception although in reality maybe there were 30 or 40 or so? (Bo Jackson, Cliff Branch, Albert Lewis off the top of my head). I think there may be about 300 in the HOF and in this draft. Maybe a draft pool of 500 would have been more interesting.

Sadly (at least to me), aside from a few big names (Thorpe, Hein, Nagurski, Hutson, Baugh, Grange, Nevers), the 20s and 30s aren't typically included in these lists. Hubbard was first team on the 50th Anniversary team, but seems to be gone from all such lists now. Ken Strong was at least on the 50th year team as a kicker, but even after 50 years, we weren't seeing Johnny Blood, Dutch Clark, etc. show up on commemorative teams.

I don't think you can really fault the selectors for not choosing 1920's and 30's players. Some of the positions don't really exist anymore, and the two-way aspect is hard to factor in. The competition at all-time QB and RB positions is fierce, and many of the best 1920's/30's players fall into those categories. I think when the NFL did their 75th anniversary team, Mel Hein was the only old-time player to make it. Even the few big names mentioned in the draft, Thorpe and Grange were picked more for name recognition than anything they did on the field. It might be a cop out, but I think you need a separate 'all-time' team to account for two-way players, otherwise they will never be recognized.

I think Hein, Nagurski, Hutson, and Baugh all made the 75 year team. But, I get your point. The two-way ends are particularly hard to map to the modern game. Lavie Dilweg v. Deacon Jones and Jerry Rice. I get the issue

They actually did have a 75 yr two-way team, so someone was on the same page as you. The problem with it in my opinion was they kind of forced names into it who they wanted to recognize - Steve Van Buren and Marion Motley come to mind - great players to recognize, but not really for two-way achievement.

The particular case of Hubbard though.... It's not that hard to map him at least to an offensive tackle in a fantasy draft. He was pretty dominant and had good size for his day. Understand not taking him as a DT although his rep was good in that area from what I've read as well.
