'71 Cowboys VS '72 Dolphins
In light of the recent thread I just started, why not another '70s Dal/Mia one. An historically overlooked Big D champ vs a Miami team that was better (weak schedule or not) the following year after losing that very SBVI, but still not as dominating as the '73 installment. My guess is '73 Mia beats '71 Dallas though it'd be close, but how about '72?

Re: '71 Cowboys VS '72 Dolphins
Looks like I am going to be the first to take a stab at this...
In my opinion the final results of Super Bowl VI came down to experience in that the Cowboys had already been to the Super Bowl the previous year, while this was the first time for the Dolphins. Dallas, on one hand, might have been extra focused as a result of a chip on its shoulder in that they probably should have won the previous years Super Bowl. Miami, on the other hand, might have been a bit wet behind the ears.
A potential clash between the 71 Cowboys and 72 Dolphins kind of reminds me of Super Bowl XIII between the Steelers and Cowboys- two championship caliber teams with Hall of Fame laden rosters is going to equal a great game for the ages.
Miami had the better running game in 1972 (as opposed to 71) in that Mercury Morris played the more expanded role. As a matter of fact, Miami improved overall on offense in scoring 385 points as opposed to 315. Defense numbers were close to a wash.
In Super Bowl VI, Miami ran only 43 offense plays compared to Dallas' 67. This might better balance out in that the 72 Dolphins had the better running game. Something tells me that the 71 Cowboys are not going to gouge the 72 Dolphins defense for 252 yards rushing either.
How DALLAS wins:
The Cowboys are simply too good- they simply have too many weapons on offense: Staubach, Duane Thomas, Calvin Hill, Bob Hayes, Lance Alworth, Ditka, etc. At the same time, defensively they have the right combination of all pros (renfro, lilly, howley) and veterans such as Herb Adderley with prior championship experience to keep the Dolphins honest on offense.
It is a closer game; it is a better game; but Dallas still prevails: 20 - 10
How MIAMI wins:
The Dolphins are a completely different animal in 1972. Of course, their pride is wounded from the one sided loss in 1971- Miami knows they are better than that, particularly in 1972- so they are the team more focused with a chip on its shoulder. The key is that they take better care of the football and win the turnover battle. Also, with the stronger running game, the Dolphins defense is not on the field as much, which keeps the Dallas offense honest.
Again, it is a closer game; it is a better game; but Miami prevails: 17 -13

Re: '71 Cowboys VS '72 Dolphins
I'd consider the 1972 Dolphins as being at the very least equally as dominant as the 1973 Dolphins...the 72 Dolphins scored the most points and gave up the fewest, and didn't lose a game. All of this while using their back up QB for the majority of the regular season and postseason.
I think the 72 & 73 Dolphins are 'better' than the 1971 Cowboys, but I'm sure if hypothetical games were to be played, the result could go either way. The Dolphins played Dallas in 1973, and the Dolphins won a close game on the road 14-7.
