I actually went to the one game he started in 1998 against the Jets. I just recall a lot of fans around me (bandwagon NY football fans) were in disbelief that Steve DeBerg was starting. "Nah he retired like in the early 90s! Probably another DeBerg"
He was absolutely battered too. Ended up getting pulled I believe because Reeves saw how much agony his 44 year old body was being put through. One hit I recall after a pass, he just dropped like it was Wilbur Marshall-Joe Ferguson part 2.
To me DeBerg was the very definition of middling for most of his career. Good enough to tease, tough, but will always leave you wondering if you can do better at the QB position.
