Bob St. Clair

Post by Bryan »

I saw a remarkable clip involving Bob St. Clair. The setting is a 1955 preseason game between the Giants and Niners, played in Seattle. YA Tittle tries to compete an out pattern, but Em Tunnell cuts in front of the pass at the Giants 20-yard line and appears to be on his way to a TD. At the Giants 40-yard line, we see St. Clair enter the picture at the bottom of the screen as Tunnell continues to sprint down the sideline. St. Clair is even with Tunnell at this point. Tunnell can't pull away from St. Clair...St. Clair closes in...and tackles Tunnell at the San Fran 20-yard line.

I guess that preseason game had a story of its own, too:

The Seattle Daily Times only noted the play in passing and St. Clair's coach, Red Strader, seemed more impressed by Tunnell's abilities. It's ironic that St. Clair was able to chase him down in such impressive fashion, since he suffered a leg injury later in the game.

I recall a Sport magazine story on Bob St. Clair in the early 60's titled "The 49er Who Eats Raw Meat." When ordering in a restaurant, St. Clair would tell the waiter, "I want a steak, raw." When the waiter did a double take take, St. Clair said, "Take the steak out of the freezer, put it on a plate, and bring it to me."

Imagine St. Clair and Tim Rossovich going to dinner together :D

Bob St. Clair was a popular Bay Area figure.
He was even Mayor of Daly City, a suburb south of San Francisco on the Peninsula.
He also owned a liquor store in the Mission District which later was bought and run for several years by my friend Janos.
I filled in occasionally and can honestly say I worked at Bob's cash register.

Here's a link to a Coffin Corner article about St. Clair by Bob Carroll:
