Who would you nominate for the Hall of Shame?

Post by Jeremy Crowhurst »

And what would your criteria be? Ryan Leaf and JaMarcus Russell are obvious picks at QB, Lawrence Phillips at RB. To me, there has to be a failure on the field as well as off, which might exclude Aaron Hernandez.

Other ideas?

The tough thing when it comes to failure on and off the field is that most such players have short careers if they don't wash out immediately. Guys like Warren Wells, Greg Hardy, Pacman Jones, and Alton Smith (and as you mentioned, Aaron Hernandez) definitely qualify under off-field failure, but played well.

Another who comes to mind who might fit both categories is Joe Don Looney. Did not play well and was reportedly a terrible headache for the coaching staffs who dealt with him.

Not much to go on on-field, but Rae Carruth might also qualify.

Going by expectations/draft status vs. on-field performances, you might have to start with #1 overall picks: Russell, Tim Couch, Ki-Jana Carter, Walt Patulski, Terry Baker, Bobby Garrett, etc.

I would disagree. He had two forgivable, goofy moments. One in a Super Bowl that was long since decided, another cost them a game...but the Cowboys repeated as Champions that year anyway. Other than that, he had a solid career.

No question they have the on-field part. Though except perhaps for Russell, not sure there's a problematic off-field component, assuming that's part of the definition (which it may or may not be).

He also had a long suspension for drug use.
