Um.... TE Aaron Hernandez?
Surely we can do better than that!
(But I'm still laughing too hard to think of anyone)
At Strong Safety I'd like to nominate Jeff Fuller from the 49ers.
Perhaps not better than the other two but still deserving.

Was off to Pro Bowl-type season in 1983, then diagnosed with cancer, died soon after... was a special teams, sometimes dimeback in first few years.

Not sure if you can classify Casanova as some who "had to" retire. When he quit, it was noted that he was retiring "to devote full time to medical studies."bachslunch wrote:Plenty of players tough to leave off including Bo Jackson, Terrell Davis, Priest Holmes, Calvin Johnson, Frank Buncom, Billy Sims, Alan Ameche, Joe Theismann, Greg Cook, Jerome Brown, Tommy Casanova.

Milt Davis was a very good CB for the title-winning Colts teams in the late-50's, and he retired early (in 1961 after only 5 seasons) due to unfair treatment of black players.

When asked who was the toughest opponent he faced, Jerome Barkum stated, "A guy for me would be Robert James- he played with the Buffalo Bills. He blew his knee out, but this guy was one hell of a cornerback."JWL wrote:Bob James is one. He played 83 games Buffalo from 1969-74. He received all pro recognition three times. He had to retire early. I am not sure why. One former Jet, in an oral history book, said James was the best he faced.

Joe Senser would be better. Senser has had an unfortunate life of late, but it really hasn't been his own doing.JuggernautJ wrote:Um.... TE Aaron Hernandez?
