Best pair of games between division opponents in same season
Best pair of games between division opponents in same season
In 1962 the Packers played the Lions twice, being in the same division/conference. The first game was a 9-7 win, late comeback by the Packers, subject of the Run To Daylight book. The second game was a memorable 26-14 massacre by the Lions on Thanksgiving in Detroit, giving the Packers their only loss of the season.
Those two might be tough to top. What are some others?

1979 Browns-Steelers MAYBE makes the list:
*Browns fall behind 27-0 and are trailing 44-14 when Brian Sipe throws three touchdown passes to make it 44-35 with nine minutes left, but the Steelers eat up the clock and score a clinching TD with less than two minutes left. Jack Ham was quoted afterward about the comeback, saying that he was afraid that Don Cockroft would end up kicking the winning FG for a 45-44 win.
*Steelers win 33-30 in OT. Matt Bahr kicks a tying FG with 24 seconds left in regulation, then kicks one with nine seconds left in OT.

SF/Rams '89, top that!
LA holding SF to no TDs at Candlestick in the first meeting, 13-12, and then of course the Classic MNF comeback in Anaheim! And to think the Rams laid SUCH an egg in the NFCC!

That MNF game was the best I've ever seen.74_75_78_79_ wrote:SF/Rams '89, top that!
But a pair of games that might have been even better?
How about the 1967 Colts/Rams match ups?
Remember, both teams ended the season 11-1-2 and the .917 Colts didn't make the playoffs based on the results of their two games with the Rams.

Game 2, last day of the season with the winner advancing to the playoffs:

I hesitate to say it but... Top that?

The Packers and Vikings played a pair of 34-31 contests in 2004, both of which were decided on the final play, and the second of which determined the division winner.

1986--Browns and Oilers
First game--Browns trail 20-9 with less than three minutes left, but a Kosar-to-Slaughter TD pass and a fumble recovery on the ensuing kickoff that leads to another touchdown give the Browns a 23-20 win.
Second game--Low scoring game saw the Oilers tie the game at 10 with 50 seconds left in regulation--thanks to a drive led by Andrew Luck's father , with the Browns winning on a Mark Moseley (in his first game with the team) FG with 16 seconds left in OT.

San Francisco's only two wins in 2004 were by scores of 31-28 in overtime vs the Cardinals.
