Re: Down and Distance Run/Pass Ratios
At one point a number of years back, Sean Lahman started a project to digitize NFL game books a la Retrosheet so that users could easily compile this kind of play by play data. Sean left the forum 5-6 years ago and I guess the project died on the vine. I know a number of games had been done because he had a bunch of volunteers who were helping him input the data. I did not get involved in the effort, but I remember it was quite cumbersome and took about three hours to digitize an entire game, and that didn't include checking and double checking the data to make sure everything was inputted correctly.JohnBowen wrote:Is there anywhere this information can be found. I've never seen this kind of data broken out. In fact, the only time I've ever seen mass down and yard data was in the original late 80's "Hidden Game of Football" book, in which they took play by play data for an entire season (it was either 1985 or 1986) and broke it down into down and yard situations (1st and 10, 2nd and 6, etc) and gave the frequency of each, and I think the average yards gained and the percentage of times a first down was converted in each situation.
I would think somebody at one of the more stat-based football sites would be compiling this kind of data.
