75th -> 100th: DE

Post by 74_75_78_79_ »

Any chance JJ Watt gets in a la Reggie White/Rod Woodson getting in despite still being relatively new? Assuming he keeps up at the same level/pace the next few years, that is. Reggie had 9 NFL seasons and Rod had 7 seasons under belt when both were picked in '94. Again, barring injury or whatnot, JJ will have had eight ('11 thru '18).

Of course, the three DEs who were selected in '94 are Deacon, Gino, and Reggie.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Marchetti get removed--not because he doesn't deserve to remain, just because all of his highlights are in black and white. Deacon was as colorful as they come and Reggie is still warmly remembered.

Removing Marchetti would be a travesty, Otto Graham film is mostly black and white, Night Train Lane is mostly black and white.

J. J. is an interesting case, with so few seasons (relatively) I actually think it comes down to 1) Does he return as the player we know or a diminished version of that, and 2) Does his - essentially - missing 2016 impact it. I think his 2012 was certainly similar to the best seasons Deacon or Reggie or Marchetti had. A 4th DPOY would put him on it. But speaking from personal experience, backs can be finicky.

If you add, a 4th DE, it has to be Bruce Smith. I don't think he's at the Reggie/Deacon/Gino level, but he is well ahead of everyone else.

Shame on me, how can I possibly forget to mention him?? Not only that, but couldn't he actually be placed at the level of the three already in? And then there's Charles Haley to at least mention as well. Still...JJ is someone who likely will have garnered the same level of cred as did a Reggie or Woodson circa '94 by the time Season 100 rolls around. Only so many DEs to be included, I guess.

Even if JJ maintains his level of play the next few years, I think Bruce still has to be chosen over him. But it would be pretty darn close. I've always said Watt is the modern day version of Smith. Their style of play is similar using their long arms to their advantage.

There's always 2044 (125th) if Watt don't get in three years from now.

Watt already has more DPOY awards than Bruce...or anyone else who's not Lawrence Taylor. But I agree he has years to go before he catches up to Bruce.
