75th -> 100th: OL

Post by JuggernautJ »

75th Anniversary team:
http://www.nfl.com/history/legends/75th

Just like the QB thread: I'll list the 75th Anniversary Team selections and we'll assume +1 spot per position (C, G and OT) for the next 25 years.
I am also assuming (though you need not) that the players chosen for the 75th Anniversary Team are the best representatives for the game's first 75 years... so I won't be trading off Mel Hein for Chuck Bednarik... but if I felt the need to add two centers of the last 25 years I would have to remove one from the previous 75.

C: Mel Hein and Mike Webster
+1: Dawson or Stephenson... tough call...
G: Gene Upshaw, John Hannah, Jim Parker
+1: Randall McDaniel ? Alan Faneca?
T: Anthony Munoz, Forrest Gregg, Roosevelt Brown
+1: no offense intended but none of those coming to mind (Stan Jones, Jonathan Ogden, Orlando Pace) seem to fit with the three above... maybe Art Shell??

What do you think?

If forced to add a Center, I would choose Jim Otto. I would be fine with having only two C's on the 100th team (Hein & Webster).

The best "post 75th" G I saw was Larry Allen of the Cowboys. I would add him over Faneca, and if there are only three Gs on the 100th team then I would have Allen replace Upshaw (Hannah, Parker, Allen).

Ogden and Boselli were the best "post 75th" OTs I saw, and Boselli had a short career. I would have Ogden replace Rosey Brown on the team, with the three OTs being Munoz, Gregg, Ogden.

Joe Thomas could be interesting versus Ogden and Pace, I'd take him over the latter. Roaf not quite, Walter Jones has too short a peak - one person's view.

Also hate the idea of knocking guys off but I suppose the 200 year team have 7 centers or something.

I would choose Bruce Matthews as a versatile utility man. He made 14 Pro Bowls at guard and center. I know Pro Bowls are not always a true measure of a player's worth (Larry Allen was making Pro Bowls after he could barely move,) but Matthews was making 1st Team All Pro two seasons before he retired.
