Interceptions on three consecutive plays

Post by Todd Pence »

Just stumbled across a highlight video from last years' Hall of Fame game which touted the fact that the Steelers and Vikings at one point traded back-to-back interceptions on consecutive plays. That triggered a memory from childhood, in which I distinctly remembered a game in which I saw interceptions on THREE consecutive plays.
The game in question was Dallas' 1980 Thanksgiving Day annihilation of the Seattle Seahawks. In one sequence of plays midway through the third quarter, Cowboy QB Danny White threw a pick to Seattle linebacker Joe Norman. On the very next play, Seahawk QB Sam Adkins (the only Seahawk ever to wear number 12) was intercepted by Bob Breunig. White came back in and promptly tossed another INT to safety John Harris. Three consecutive plays, three interceptions. Anybody recall any other instance where this has happened before or since?

Jim Zorn is the other Seahawk to wear #12 in a game.

Another instance of interceptions on three consecutive plays came on Dec. 17, 1979 - Week 16 - Denver at San Diego on Monday Night Football to decide the AFC West champion.

4th quarter

Don Goode intercepts Craig Morton
Next play, Steve Foley intercepts Dan Fouts
Next play, Mike Williams intercepts Craig Morton

Just for good measure, four-and-a-half minutes later, Morton is intercepted by Mike Fuller.

San Diego ultimately wins, 17-7, as Morton throws four interceptions and Fouts throws three.

I know this doesn't count, but Mike Taliaferro of the Pats was intercepted on 3 straight plays against the Chiefs in 1970. He threw an INT to Jim Kearney, but Kearney fumbled the ball back to the Pats during his return. The next play, Taliaferro was picked off by Jim Lynch, but a penalty nullified the play. On play #3, Taliaferro was picked off by Johnny Robinson.

Since a penalty nullified one of the plays it doesn't technically count as three straight interceptions, but that's a great piece of trivia nonetheless.
