Do You Think Sunday Night's Game Will Go Down In History?

I was reminded of the 1997 Sunday Night game between the Giants and Redskins that was a 7-7 tie, with both teams missing 54-yard FG tries in OT:

I was also thinking of the 1981 Chargers Dolphins playoff classic, where both teams missed short FG's late in the game or in OT.

The game was overly officiated (and often poorly, to boot) and the low score wasn't due to great defensive play (for the most part) but rather to poor play, strategy and... just everything...

I'm sure it had its redeeming moments.
But they must have occurred when I was focused elsewhere.

Well, everything "goes down in history" in one way or another. I guess the question is... is it worth remembering? Probably not from what I read. (I didn't see any of the game.)

Thinking about this game and ties in general made me think of a question though... The first NFL championship game was in 1933, however the NFL introduced overtime for any divisional tiebreak games beginning in 1940, and for championship games beginning in 1946. So how would a league champion be declared between 1933 and 1946 if the championship game ended in a tie? Award the championship to the team with the better record, like every year before 1933?

I only began focusing on this game when "The Walking Dead" ended and "The Talking Dead" was no longer interesting to me. That means I missed most of the first half and parts of the third quarter. From what I did see, I enjoyed the game. Each team made and missed a field goal in overtime. It was compelling and a little funny.

I truly don't know what people want with the NFL anymore. I see people bitch about everything.

"This game didn't have enough points."
"This game had too many points."
"This game had too many interceptions."
"This game had too many catches."
"This game had too many runs."
"This game had too many missed field goals."
"I almost went blind watching last Thursday's game."
"This game was poorly produced."
"Phil Simms said 'Jeem' too many times."

This is not the only football forum I go on. All that above stuff I see. It is ridiculous. Nobody likes anything.

It reminded me a bit of the 1983 MNF overtime tie between the Giants and Cardinals. It was a four-hour-plus debacle in which:

- two of the game's four touchdowns were scored on turnover returns;
- the two teams combined for nine sacks and 17 punts;
- Jeff Rutledge and Neil Lomax were a combined 36-of-79 passing;
- a 10-yard punt by Carl Birdsong gave the Giants the ball at the St. Louis 24;
- the Giants were penalized for offensive holding five times -- all on running plays;
- and St. Louis' Neil O'Donoghue missed three field goal attempts in OT, including two in the final 1:06 of the extra period. The second miss, from 20 yards, came when Cardinals coach Jim Hanifan decided to send in the field goal unit on second down.

Watching the game, I eventually found the incessant incompetence to be weirdly compelling. Bill Parcells afterwards: "'If somebody'd had to win that game, we might still be out there.''

Well, the quality of football this year HAS seemed to be extraordinarily crappy and most of the Thursday night color rash uniforms ARE unsightly.

One of the reasons for the number of bad games has been the lack of flow caused by the number of ticky-tacky penalties brought on by the ever increasing number of silly rules. Pulling guys off the pile? Leaping? Are you kidding me? It just never ends.

I've been bitching and complaining about the number of penalties in CFL games for years and now the affliction has infected the NFL. Head referees in both leagues get more screen time than even the biggest star players. It's incredibly annoying.

How about Cards/Eagles 10-10 tie at Vet in '86 (3-3 going into 4th)? I remember the announcers saying it was as if no one wanted to win.
