Anger Trades

Post by BD Sullivan »

This unique category concerns those trades that were based on an owner/coach's anger toward a player being the key reason for the deal. Listed below are four, though I know that it only scratches the surface. So feel free to add to the list:

1962: Milt Plum is traded from the Browns to Lions by Paul Brown after he trashes Brown's play-calling in a local newspaper.
1964: Jim Ringo is traded from the Packers to the Eagles by Lombardi after he brings an agent to negotiate his contract.
1971: Billy Kilmer is traded from the Saints to the Redskins, supposedly because he was dating John Mecom's personal secretary.
1974: Bill Bergey is traded from the Bengals to the Eagles by Paul Brown after he signs a WFL contract.

Would these qualify for your list? Some have a slightly different tone than what you mentioned, but I thought I'd offer them anyway:

1971: Cowboys trade Duane Thomas to the Patriots after long disputes with Landry, Cowboys management. Patriots can't make him happy, so trade is negated.

1972: Cowboys trade Duane Thomas to San Diego for same reasons as previous trade.

1972: Giants trade Fran Tarkenton to Vikings after lots of frustration with his holdouts and threats of retirement.

1976: Dolphins trade Jake Scott to Washington after a long-simmering feud between Scott and Shula.

1978: Colts trade Lydell Mitchell to San Diego after he files a racial discrimination suit against Colt management.

1979: Rams trade Isiah Robertson to Buffalo after a series of personality conflicts over the years.

And I think just about every time Randy Moss was traded it was because someone was fed up with him for any number of reasons. Probably Terrell Owens too.

Paul Brown allegedly traded Doug Atkins to Chicago after the defensive end loudly belched at a team meal.

Owens was actually only traded once, from San Francisco to Philadelphia (via Baltimore.) Every other team released him or declined to re-sign him.

Ringo bringing an agent is a myth .... a myth Lombardi perpetuated ... but still a myth:

Contract disputes are usually good for this category. Mike Ditka's trade to Philly in 1967 was because of his continually butting heads with Halas. Jack Gregory was dealt from the Browns to the Giants in 1972 because of problems with Art Modell--who also traded the rights to Tom Skladany to the Lions after a holdout that lasted the entire 1977 season.

In 1967, middle linebacker Vince Costello wanted a $500 raise. Rather than give Vince the $500, Art Modell traded him to the New York Giants for a 6th round draft choice.

35 year old Costello played well for New York in 1967, intercepting 4 passes (2nd best for Giants) and was a big factor in New York's upset victory over Cleveland that year, 38 to 34. The Giants had lost the previous 6 games to the Browns.

Lou Saban traded Cookie Gilchrist at after the 1964 season as punishment for Cookie's having walked off the field in the middle of a game late in the regular season. Saban's initial reaction was to cut Gilchrist, but was persuaded to take him back for the remainder of the year. Gilchrist was a monster in the season finale and the AFL Title Game, but that wasn't enough to make Saban want to keep him.

Didn't the Bears trade Virgil Carter to the Bengals in 1970 after Carter referred to George Halas as being "gutless" in the local papers? That was the year that Carter replaced an injured Greg Cook as starting QB and led the Bengals to their first division title.

I always thought he was cut. I'm pretty sure someone on the "75 seasons" video says this. (or something else I saw over the years) Just consulted wikipedia and confirmed he was traded. :)
