It was a tackle. Hughes had a bad heart long before the game.

The article makes it sound as though the Bears were so devastated that they lost their next (last) five games. The next week was actually a victory in the infamous Staubach-Morton every other play rotation that led to Staubach being named Cowboys QB. Their other win came two weeks later when Butkus caught the extra point that was the difference in the 16-15 victory.

1.) I feel sorry for Chuck Hughes. I also think that the fact that Butkus was blamed for anything is ignorant.

2.) It goes to show how far the medical field has come. While it could happen today that a player has a heart attack and dies in a game. I highly doubt if any symptoms presented themselves before a game or during that the player would make it on the field.
