Top 12 NFL regular season Power Rankings, 1995

Post by 74_75_78_79_ »

1) Forty Niners - defending-Champs, 38-20 Week #11
2) Cowboys - they owe GB (not Neil) for their SBXXX title
3) Steelers
4) Chiefs
5) Packers - Yancey dropping pass in endzone won them division, but I'll still place them here anyway
6) Lions - beat Niners, split w GB, finish 7-0 sweeping Bears during that stretch
7) Bills - almost had them tied w Det
8) Dolphins - yes, got swept by Colts but 5 quality wins hard to ignore, at least split w Bills
9) Chargers - 5-0 finish, defending-AFC champs, won at Indy penultimate game, as a Steeler-fan I was worried when they got in
10) Colts
11) Falcons - beat Det and also SF in finale which should 'count' being Niners were playing for top-seed
12) Eagles - only quality win vs Dallas in that bad-call (again to Emmitt) game

1. 49ers
2. Cowboys
3. Chiefs
4. Packers
5. Steelers... strong finish to the season
6. Lions... 7-0 finish
7. Dolphins
8. Eagles
9. Chargers... 5-0 finish. They were definitely on a roll and poised to do some damage like you said
10. Colts
11. Bills... were definitely losing their early 90s swagger by this point.
12. Seahawks... shocked? :) 6-2 finish puts them here... barely over Bears and Falcons

The 49ers really blew it when they dropped the Falcons reg. season finale on Christmas Eve.

I doubt Philly does to them in the playoffs what Green Bay did.

Good point. The Eagles probably don't play the tight coverages against the WCO that the Packers did.

What would have made such a matchup interesting going in would have been the possible familiarity-factor in that we all know where Ray Rhodes was the previous year. That, and the 'revenge'-factor considering what Birds did to Niners in '94. Either way, I'll agree, Eagles very likely don't do much in this matchup. Played over their heads vs Detroit (as Lions played at their worst), brought back down to earth following week be it Dallas or San Fran.

Yeah, Chris, here it is. We both placed Detroit at #6. Of course this was with an open-mind, not knowing what would actually happen at the Vet. I still placed Pack over Lions despite Thigpen giving them division. GB were still better to me, regular or post-season.

Maybe a little (though, I wouldn't imagine, too) far-fetched asking if '00 Lions were better than any Fontes team, but still remarkable considering what I already stated (Barry now gone, Ross quitting mid-season).
