11-3, 1962 Lions

Post by 74_75_78_79_ »

Of course the Pack was not only Best in '62, but the Jewel of the Lombardi Era - amongst the Greatest teams Ever! Lions simply a case of a very great team being 'stuck' in the same conference as an historic Juggernaut. That said, where do you place these guys amongst those (other than that very 13-1er) champs and other greats of the '60's and, perhaps, beyond and before? '60 Eagles? '63 Bears? '63 Chargers? Sherman's Giants? '64 Browns? '64/'65 Bills? '66/'67 Cowboys? '68 Jets/Colts? '69 Chiefs/Vikings? Any other Green Bay champ besides the '62 variety, etc, etc?

The infamous Milt Plum blunder may very well have spared the Pack from having to face the Lions in a playoff game.

The Lions lost their last game of the season 3-0 to the Bears. It's quite likely that they would have taken that game more seriously and finished 13-1, negating the need for a playoff with the Packers. Of course, that's only if all of their other games would have played out the same, which is far from a safe assumption considering that Detroit was insanely fired up for the Thanksgiving rematch with GB because of their heartbreaking loss in the first game.

Not a Plum fan, but I really don't know how he always gets blamed for that interception. His receiver, Terry Barr, slipped and fell down after the ball left Plum's hand. I don't know if Barr could have caught it, but he would have at least got a hand on it to prevent the interception by Adderley, who wasn't even covering Barr and had to come off his own man, deeper in the pattern, to catch the ball. And Plum can't be blamed for the play call, either; the Lions had called timeout after second down and the play was decided on the sidelines.

I totally agree but, as the story goes, the defense blamed Milt, too. Didn't Karras throw his helmet or something at him after the game or is it an urban legend?
